Background of the Study
Twitter threads—sequential series of tweets—offer a unique glimpse into the evolution of language in digital environments. In Nigeria, these threads are used to discuss social, political, and cultural issues, leading to distinct morphosyntactic patterns that differ from traditional language use. Users often employ abbreviated forms, creative punctuation, and code‑switching in these extended conversations. Such practices reflect both the constraints of the Twitter platform and the desire for expressive, nuanced discourse. This study assesses the morphosyntactic patterns present in Nigerian Twitter threads by examining the interplay between morphology (word formation) and syntax (sentence structure). It explores how digital constraints, user creativity, and socio-cultural influences combine to produce non‑standard language forms that challenge conventional grammatical norms (Adeniyi, 2023). The research seeks to understand how these patterns emerge, evolve, and contribute to broader digital language change, providing a comprehensive view of online discourse in Nigeria (Okoro, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the prevalence of innovative morphosyntactic patterns in Nigerian Twitter threads, there is limited empirical research on how these digital conversations reshape language structure. Existing studies tend to focus on either morphology or syntax in isolation, neglecting the integrated nature of language use in threaded discourse. This gap hinders our ability to understand how extended digital interactions influence language evolution. The study aims to fill this gap by providing a systematic analysis of morphosyntactic features in Nigerian Twitter threads, examining how digital constraints and user strategies contribute to linguistic innovation (Chukwu, 2023).
